Rock art sites on the moors ‘under threat’

One of the most important groups of prehistoric art in the region is under threat because of neglect, a report says.

Neolithic carvings, known as rock art, are scattered throughout the dale, and there are a large number on Barningham Moor.

The art, about 5,000 years old, takes the form of concentric circles, interlocking rings and hollowed cups, and has been carved into rocky outcrops and boulders.

About 40 examples were discovered in Teesdale in 2008 as part of an initiative to catalogue and publish online all the prehistoric art in the region...
