Rediscovered: Unique 5000 year old human figurine from Skara Brae

1/4. The long lost figurine from Skara Brae (Stromness Museum & Rebecca Marr)

 
A long lost Neolithic human figurine found at Skara Brae in the 1860s has been rediscovered in the collections of Stromness Museum.  Dr David Clarke identified the figurine among artefacts from Skaill House donated to the museum without provenance* in the 1930s, while undertaking research on Skara Brae funded by Historic Environment Scotland.

Dr Clarke said: “Amazingly, we found it in the last box of the day. I’ve always thought this figurine to be lost forever so seeing it staring back at me from its bed of tissue paper was completely unexpected and very exciting.” ...

The representation has been carved from a piece of whalebone and measures 9.5cm high by 7.5cm wide.  Eyes and a mouth have been cut in the face and the body has a navel, but is otherwise unadorned.  Holes through the head and body may have been used to suspend the figurine. Actualización: Redescubren una figurilla procedente de Skara Brae (Escocia) de 5.000 años de antigüedad
Una figurilla neolítica con forma humana hallada en Skara Brae (Escocia) en la década de 1860, y que se había perdido hace mucho tiempo, ha sido redescubierta en las colecciones del Museo de Stromness.

El Dr. David Clarke identificó la figurilla entre los artefactos provenientes de Skaill House y donados al museo en la década de 1930, mientras se llevaba a cabo una investigación en Skara Brae financiada por Historic Environment Scotland.

La figurilla fue tallada en un trozo de hueso de ballena y mide 9,5 cm de alto por 7,5 cm de ancho. Los ojos y la boca fueron horadados en la cara, mientras que el cuerpo tiene un ombligo, sin más adornos. Los agujeros a través de la cabeza y el cuerpo pudieron haber sido utilizados para colgar la figurilla.

La misma fue descubierta originalmente por William G. Watt, un hacendado local, cuando excavaba un lecho de piedra en la Casa nº 3 de la villa neolítica mencionada...
